Free Now for Business analyzes the new reality of business travel

Free Now for Business and GBTA Europe surveyed travel managers and business travelers in seven European markets. The main objective of this study is to identify their habits and expectations in terms of ground transportation, as well as new trends related to the health crisis.

This is the first white paper on the business travel market that Free Now for Business has produced, for which they have drawn on the expertise of GBTA Europe in order to decipher 7 key markets in Europe. Analysis aimed at the profound changes that are and will continue to disrupt the business travel sector for many years to come. 

During this study, 200 travel managers and more than 700 business travellers were surveyed in France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Spain, Portugal and Ireland during September 2020.

 

Regularly used Taxi/VTC applications

The first results of this survey show that taxi/VTC applications are once again becoming part of the daily life of business travelers. For example, in France, 60% of business travelers use these tools regularly when they travel.

VTCs are less often integrated into corporate travel policies than “traditional” cabs. (89% compared with 96% at the European level) As for the impact of the health situation, it has slowed down these users less than in the air and long-haul sectors. In fact, between 58% and 87% of European business travelers “always” or “often” use a taxi/VTC application on business trips.

During its study, Free Now for Business also looked at the use of micro-mobility services, which is still marginal in the business travel sector. Even though the health crisis has been a catalyst on the use of bicycles or scooters by the population, many European travelers are interested in using one of these vehicles during their business trips. (39% in the French market) Most travel policies do not yet address the issue or address it in 75% of cases in order to prohibit its use.

 

An after Covid-19 for the business trip

Of course there will be a “before” and “after” Covid-19 for business travellers and travel managers. Moreover, on a European scale, 50% of travel managers say that their company has changed its mobility policy following the covid-19 pandemic. 

88% of them mentioned the use of controlled ground transportation providers to ensure compliance with safety and hygiene standards.

To reinforce the safety aspect, for 79% of travel managers, tracking data related to land trips, such as the destination location or the driver’s name, is included as one of the current properties.

Some of the study managers pointed out the difficulty of tracking data for some means of ground transportation such as buses, scooters or “traditional” cabs:

“If an employee takes a bus, a traditional cab, or a scooter, his or her company generally does not obtain important information, such as the destination, the driver’s name, the license number, or the time of the trip. This is not the case for trips made by VTC, where the application can locate the traveler and access all the data related to his or her trip.

However, “duty of care” is not the main criterion that travel managers look for in VTC and cab applications. For travel managers, the criteria are as follows:

Simplicity of booking (61%)
Registration and subscription fees ( 52 % )
Waiting time ( 38%)
Duty of care ( 28%)
Traveller tracking and integration with the risk management platform ( 23%)

As for French business travelers, the same podium can be found :
